Port of Astoria Protects Columbia River

The Port of Astoria, huddled on the northwest corner of Oregon, has taken the next step to protect the Columbia River's many fish runs and wildlife from polluted stormwater runoff. In late July, they assisted Hydrophix of Oregon in installing ten Ultra-Urban Filters in their boat yard and paved facility.

While the Port has used burlap bags and "sausage" skimmers to collect sediment and some of the hydrocarbon and oil contaminants from their grounds, they decided to make an extra effort to capture potentially harmful pollutants from reaching the adjacent tidewater river.

Since Astoria receives over 70 inches of rain a year, they wanted a filtration media that would handle the high flows. The Port will set an example for other agencies and businesses located near one of the most productive fisheries on the West Coast.

Seattle Parks and Puget Soundkeeper Install Ultra-Urban Filters at Golden Gardens

In partnership with Seattle Parks and Recreation, Puget Soundkeeper has installed Hydrophix's Ultra-Urban Filters with antimicrobial Smart Sponge Plus at Golden Gardens Park.  Situated on the Puget Sound just north of Seattle, Golden Gardens features sandy beaches, restored wetlands, and stunning views of the Olympic Mountains.  It also includes parking lots whose storm drains empty directly into the Sound.

In a project initiated by Puget Soundkeeper, Hydrophix and AbTech Industries fitted Ultra-Urban Filters into storm drains in the Park's northern lot.  The filters will catch trash and debris, absorb hydrocarbons, and destroy harmful bacteria, all of which would otherwise have flowed unimpeded into the Sound.

Trash & Debris Guard: reduce maintenance

Beaverton, Oregon, has about 1,000 curb inlet catch basins. They schedule basin maintenance twice a year and sweep streets one to two times per month. The Public Works department is interested in reducing the basin cleanings to one per year by seeing if the Trash & Debris Guard can keep enough sediment and debris on the street for removal by the sweeper. So far the trial looks promising. Since Beaverton receives about 35" of rain a year, plenty of debris is transported to the basin sumps, especially along busy and tree-lined streets.

Partnerships with Non-Profit Organizations

Hydrophix and AbTech Industries work with organizations concerned about keeping our water bodies safe and clean for people and habitable for fish and wildlife. We partner in various ways to mutually achieve our missions for attaining the highest water quality possible.

Whether it's keeping our public beaches safe for recreation, our streams free of harming pollutants, or implementing solutions to comply with regulatory or legal requirements, Hydrophix can help achieve water quality solutions.

What Others are Saying

"[Norwalk, Connecticut's] Filter Project will help clean our waters for swimming, boating, and shell fishing and improve the general public health. We are very excited about the success of the project and the rate at which the system was implemented." Terry Backer, Long Island Soundkeeper Executive

"We've been looking for new and innovative approaches to solving the critical threat to our waterways. We see this project [the Filter Project] as a great opportunity to participate on the ground level using cutting edge technology to address nonpoint source pollution." Hal Alvord, Director of Public Works, Norwalk, Connecticut

"Our number one priority is to install the Ultra-Urban Filters in drains that are tributary to waters used for recreation... I am pleased with the results of the pilot program in dramatically reducing bacteria in our stormdrains and thus allowing us to keep our beaches safe and open to the public." Tom Leary, Stormwater Management Division Officer,
Long Beach Public Works Department, Long Beach, California
