Smart Sponge® and Antimicrobial Smart Sponge® Plus
Hydrophix is proud to offer AbTech Industries' Smart Sponge® and Smart Sponge® Plus, each a unique solution to hydrocarbon and bacterial pollution. The performance of Smart Sponge® and Smart Sponge® Plus is based on innovative, patented polymer technologies that are chemically selective to hydrocarbons and can destroy harmful bacteria. Smart Sponge® fully encapsulates recovered oil, transforming the pollutants into a non-leaching, stable solid, ready for easy recycling.
Smart Sponge® Plus adds a pioneering antimicrobial agent, permanently bound to the Smart Sponge® polymer surface and capable of targeting harmful bacteria such as enterococcus, E. coli, and fecal coliforms. Unlike alternative antimicrobial technologies, the patented agent neither introduces chemicals into the treated water nor produces toxic metabolites: it destroys waterborne bacteria via its interaction with the microorganism's cell membrane. And the antimicrobial activity neither reduces the agent's capability nor causes its depletion, enabling long-term, effective treatment.
Smart Sponge® Plus is the only non-toxic, fully recyclable filtration system that destroys bacteria at the street level.

Ultra-Urban® Filter with Smart Sponge® or Smart Sponge® Plus
The Ultra-Urban® Filter with Smart Sponge® is an innovative, low-cost BMP that helps meet NPDES requirements with effective filtration, efficient application, and low maintenance. Developed by AbTech Industries, the Ultra-Urban® Filter is built of high-strength, corrugated, recycled-content plastic and is designed for use in storm drains that experience oil and grease pollution accompanied by sediment and debris.
Trash and sediment accumulate in the upper basket chamber while oil and grease are absorbed in the filtration media. When fitted with Smart Sponge® Plus, the Ultra-Urban® Filter also targets and destroys harmful bacteria such as enterococcus, fecal coliform, and E. coli.
The Ultra-Urban® Filter fits into most existing catch basins and curb openings, allowing easy installation. Once in place, it destroys harmful bacteria and removes up to 95% of hydrocarbons present in stormwater runoff, while simultaneously maintaining high flow rates.
It is non-mechanical and low-maintenance, with a design that allows sediment and debris to be quickly vacuumed out of the module through the drain opening. It is also long-lasting: under normal operating conditions, the entire recyclable Ultra-Urban® Filter can be replaced every two to three years, depending on its deployment and pollutant (hydrocarbon) loading.
The Environmental Protection Agency has identified the Ultra-Urban® Filter as a Best Management Practice (BMP) for stormwater management.

Trash & Debris Guard
The Trash & Debris Guard is a simple, low-cost solution to dramatically reduce the volume of trash, sediment, and debris entering a curb-opening storm drain. It can be used as a stand-alone filtration device or in conjunction with Hydrophix's catch basin inserts, dramatically reducing the maintenance of the filtration device train. The Guard is easy to install, has minimal flow restriction, and is easily adaptable for either retrofit or new applications.

Maintenance Saver
The Maintenance Saver is a durable and economical solution for sites with high levels of trash, debris, and sediment. Fitting conveniently into any drain-insert Ultra-Urban® Filter, the Maintenance Saver captures debris before it can enter the catch basin, thereby both facilitating storm drain maintenance and extending the life of your filter.

Storm Water Antimicrobial Treatment (SWAT) System
High volume flows of storm water are effectively treated for harmful bacteria and hydrocarbons in a Hydrophix custom-designed vault. They are engineered around our permeable reactive barrier: a large volume of Smart Sponge® Plus. Typically installed in vault applications at the end of a pipe, the SWAT system with Smart Sponge is fully scalable and offers a low maintenance, cost-effective solution that requires no electricity or moving parts. Depending on the site's requirements - water quality flows, maximum acceptable head loss, footprint constraints - we develop a reliable solution for exceptional storm water treatment.
When compared to ultra-violet or ozone systems that treat for bacteria, our SWAT systems provide significant cost savings. Preliminary tests show that we can now destroy nearly all of enterococcus bacteria and achieve unprecedented levels of E. coli reduction without chemical or mechanical means.

Passive and Line Skimmers
Our Passive and Line Skimmers are designed to absorb and encapsulate hydrocarbons while floating on standing or flowing water. With an absorbent capacity two to three times their weight, a strong buoyancy, and the ability to dramatically reduce or eliminate sheen, our Passive and Line Skimmers transform pollutants into a stable, non-leaching solid for easy recycling. Built from AbTech Industries' durable and hydrophobic Smart Sponge® technology, the Passive and Line Skimmers will not deteriorate in water and can remain on site indefinitely to guard against potential releases. And when it comes time to replace the Skimmers, no water absorbed means less weight to pull.
